The faith of the poor; the faith of the rich

Hasidic quotation [Martin Buber, Tales of the Hasidim, Later masters (New York, 1947), p. 92]:

"How easy it is for a poor man to depend on God! What else has he to depend on? And how hard it is for a rich man to depend on God.  All his possession call out to him: 'Depend on us!'"

Oh, and those possessions call so loudly...and incessantly...

  1. The reality is that our possessions give us voice. Those of us who have a voice must speak up for those who have no voice.

  2. This is a good quote. Often its at times of great loss that we turn toward (or back towards) God whether we have lost material possessions or things like relationships or our way of looking at the world.
